Another edition of breakcore_LABS events!. breakcore_LABS special edition for Cellsbutton#04 information were only available from accessing breakcore_LABS blog at or via Cellsbutton#04 AR Code viewer on HONF website. As usual, an iron construction were built responding to a rather cheesy style of the stage from the club. Well, what to say, it was the first time for HONF to held breakcore_LABS event in the club, and we picked the most cheesy club in town! Where is it? Well, we gave you the hints.

First on the lineup, was a performance from Sebastien Szczyrk (FR) with his project called “un escargot vide ?” warming up the stage with his digital synthetic sound-scape. It’s his second performance in Cellsbutton#04 and on breakcore_LABS, he played a rather free-style noise performance filled with improvisation in the performance. Followed after was a collaborative performance from Sodadosa x Bangkai Angsa that presented an experimental noise music produced from fully analog instruments, effects, distortions and feedbacks. After several times performing in breakcore_LABS events, Sodadosa bringing a new performative action on the stage with Bangkai Angsa, capturing the front part of the stage by abusing their instruments, fighting each other through sounds. The third on the lineup was a performance from Benjamin Laurent Aman, presenting a composition of a dark noise to gaze the audience. The three performance was filled with Visual projection from VJ Numberone, VJ Manticore, Kenneth Feinstein (US | SG) and Pierre Le Cann (FR).

After three performance, a short paused break taken as we presented a special movie screening called “Land Of 1000 Dances“, a documentary film that is wrote, conceptualized and directed by Rotraut Pape (DE). The film itself was taken from a personal experience, memories and insights from Dick Hebdige (UK). The film was speaking of club-culture and its’ resistance, movements, and backgrounds from the early 70′s. After the movie screening, breakcore_LABS are closed with a collaborative performance from no.E Sakana (US) and Rene Lysloff (US) presenting a unique sound composition in of with contemporary Indonesian ethnic and a rather IDM classified music. Started from a solo performance from no.E with a rather danceable music, then together with Rene to perform an astonishing music composition that compliment each other that from our opinion, is a “fractal(ize)-ordered-composed” sounds. So, closing the night, and found we already preparing for the next breakcore_LABS event. 0.8.2, o.9 or whatever, we’ll keep you posted! see ya!

It is Surprising, in a positive way. Usually the data exchange is done via Internet, especially today, Internet Technology allowed us to done it in a simpler way, cheaper and faster. It was the first breakcore_LABS for Surabaya, the city of heroes. cok2cok theme was taken from jancok, an Eastern Javanese local word that generally be used as an expression of anger, disappointment or even could be refer to friends. Well, you have to be in good relationship to call your friend jancok and get away without a blue-colored-shape Borneo map on your face. This word is multi-meanings for multi-purpose use that have always transform in daily life. So, cok2cok, is the guys (arek-arek) in Surabaya expression and intention in friendship and the spirit of togetherness of making this edition of breakcore_LABS to bridge localities in to a transformation of unity!

Since Suro and Boyo wasn’t around at the present time, the guys (Arek-arek) were preparing everything in Product Design Department (Fakultas Despro) of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS) Surabaya. Arek-arek was the guilty party for arranging the whole events from arranging the stages, producing stickers until free t-shirt print that was available on the event that was made possible by the collaboration and support with 337 with Reza A.K.A. Aa’ Arul as the leading guilty party.  Started at 07.30, the event was opened with the performance from Robot with their Synth Rock musics with a composition of slashing melodies and noises. They performed a rather slow beats, dark rhythmic and gloomy musical composition from their demo album to the crowded audiences that already waited before the event was started. After Robot, a group of 6 musicians that call themselves Wikked Joi Suzann presented a collaborative performance of hard noise music composition for the audience. They sat amongst the audience and having fun themselves with experimenting multiple instruments and effects that were scattered everywhere and surrounding them.

Third hero on the playlist was Sonixx’s performance with his experimental music with electro touches on the background, combined with synthesizer’s robotic sounds for seasonings. His solid performance and music composition that enriched by danceable beats invited many from the audience to enjoy themselves in movements on the dance floor. Terbujur Kaku performance followed after he was warmed up with a collaboration of noise performance with Benny Wicaksono (also known as VJ Herbal) and glitch visual composition from VJ Bash. Terbujur Kaku performed a rich mixes from various type of local music from  gamelan, game sounds samples, mainstream pop music and even (cen jancok koen iki!) dangdut koplo. Couldn’t help it, a confusion of dance movements and stunned stand stills with foot and/or head banging contributed by the crowds as their cheering on his breakcore music.

The last on the list was Julian Abraham with his performance that was started with a mix that is based on a clip of Indonesian national song titled “Indonesia Pusaka”.  He performed a arrangement of breakcore music that composed from various digital sounds samples which several of them were taken from hard drum sets, glitch noises and sounds from film clips. His performance is also filled with video-mixed visual composition from VJ Bash and graphic particle generated visual composition from VJ Numberone.

After the event was closed, we were together, relaxing and joking at each other and not forget to mentioned, we now can called jancok to each other with no bruises on our faces. What is “Kek2keK” label on this edition of breakcore_LABS? Well, we didn’t have any special meanings on the title of the event, more likely the name refer to a local joke between us. The title come from the word Tokek (Gekko). It come from a response to an issue that we thought as a hoax, or more precisely a conspiracy – based hoax using media tools as a main mean of advertising – or information flows, to create a popular boost on products, icons, persons, animals, plants, or any objects that create a new trends that leads to a new consumption behavior among the society. In this case we took a sample of Tokek selling following Lou Han Fish, Gelombang Cinta Plant etc. that could reach to millions and billions rupiah without any exact reason how it highly priced. We applause to the conceptor and the conspiracy making for great creativity, but we spit on them of their intentions and justification of manipulation for the sake of their own profit. So here is our own way of conspiracy, and our first action took place in our hometown. We like to joke, hell yeah sometime we did too much of it, but enough of bla – bla – ing, here is our review.

We started the event precisely on 19.30 after a hectic of preparation that already become a routine chores in every breakcore_LABS events that we held. A performance from Sodadosa opening the event at the same time with the starting of the event. His performance on the stage break the silence with his Harsh Noise music filling the amphitheater space. Second on the lineup was To Die with a special performance since they presented a collaborative performance with Individual Distortion. Their Cybergrind music filled with beat composition from Individual Distortion, as To Die loud screams and noise generated from feedbacks and effects of guitar instrument. The event continued with a performance from Individual Distortion in collaboration with Desiree Aditya (Nervous). Their performance is a mixture of Speedcore, Exta Tone and noise arrangements and composition that we were too confused to classify their music. Individual Distortion brought his daily life frustration and anger to his short-compacted music creation.

Mindfuckingboy performance come next creating a composition of disharmony in the stage with digital noise music. Mind fucked! Total anarchy of Noise fill in Taman Budaya Yogyakarta with his performance. Next on the list is Kirdec who perform a composition of Noise music enhanced with Industrial touches on the as the main dishes. His performance was an intense composition of sounds, creating a terror sonophobia (if we may call so) amongst the audience.  This was Kirdec second performance in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, following several other performances in South East Asian country on his tour.

Cangkang Serigala comes next, with their karaoke twisted terror style (ssiiggh, we still couldn’t found appropriate name for their characteristic…) shouting religious stereo-meanings in their music. They were up on the stage installation. they were on the speakers, they were everywhere, wearying the audience line of sight in spontaneous choreography. Next come Local Drugstore on the rundown with his 8-bit sounds touches combine with noise and fast beats. Cheerful 8-bit sounds was broke down with harsh drum bass that tickle the audience’s ears.

Drum N Bass beats was next as DJ Yudha performance invited the audience to pay a visit to the dance floor. His beats amuse several audience who dance tirelessly during his performance. DJ Dash follows after also with Drum N Bass music to close the long playlist in breakcore_LABS 0.7.1. His performance was filled with powerful and energetic beats that invite more people to the dance floor. It was also a tireless night for VJ Bash and VJ Manticore as their enchanting visual performance was synchronizing all music performance in this edition of breakcore_LABS. An our applause given as well for MC Ichan and MC Hamam who filled the gaps in the performance transition.

Finally, we say goodbye for now and thankful for our main support that came from Blass Sound System and Taman Budaya Yogyakarta. Our appreciation also goes to Magnum, StarCross, Departemen Satwa, iCAN, and DeadMediaFM. Great documentation from Ade Greden, superb stage managing from Argha Mahendra (Nervous), endless support from Ferial Afiff, Marcelo Vishnoe (Nervous), Putri Pitoyo, Widi, Sutanto Effendi and Stella Maris. Like we said before, this edition of breakcore_LABS was a “nightly build” effort from the artists and the organizer. It reminds us of a project called “Come 2 You” that HONF did with 10:05 newsletter with slightly different concept. We held breakcore_LABS 0.6.1 as the seventh event but part of the sixth edition since it was held for the closing party of microCELLS.

We installed the stage around 8 o’clock. Star Cross Distro on Gejayan area of Yogyakarta was supporting us with venue outside of their distro which was only 6 meters from the street. Like standard operation, we were installing-wiring-installing-plugging-installing-testing-blablaing until 8:30 and the show began!

Started with the performance of Julian Abraham (Yogyakarta) with several of his new songs. One of his latest uploaded song called Boring Morning was in the playlist. VJ Manticore (Yogyakarta) was already playing his live visual coding using Fluxus. Then Terbujur Kaku (Surabaya) with his sick music that was remixing a “truthful” song on Indonesia brainwashing pop-music mainstream band. If you wanted to know how sad  the truth is follow this link (we’re not encouraging you to watch it and we warn you not to open it). The remix was poisonous as Terbujur Kaku’s performance did a hell of a damage to our brain. Somehow we got the impression that someone just wrote Terbujur Kaku in an Alay way of writting as 73rBujUR K4kU.

Next on the lineup was Fat London with his unique Breakbeat touch on the music. His performance was inviting the crowds to keep dancing in front of the stage. The energetic music was fashioned with the finding of a phenomenon that was later known as “Ice Tea On The Dance Floor”. As the crowd was blending and melting with the surroundings, the distro was closed and all the crowds were all together, Butcher Bachelor (Jakarta) bang the crowds with his Speedcore music with chip-tunes sound touches on the dishes. We call it the night off as a collaborative performance from Ican Harem (Yogyakarta) with Terbujur Kaku screams their lungs off with remixed Cangkang Serigala‘s (Yogyakarta) music warm the steel stage of 0.6.1. Biggest thanks goes to Blass for their support,  Ade Greden and Ferial Affif for the documentations, Putri Pitoyo, Hamam Firdaus, Sutanto Effendi and Stella Maris for their wines and spirits.

ASIK!!! After a long hot days of preparing and installing our own stage, the showdown finally arrived. The echo of Adzan have disappeared from the sky waves, bottles were clinging heavily and our friends heavy laughs is all around, we decided that it is time to break the core. It was raining at the beginning, and we have to start a little late from what we planned (19.30).

DJ Yudha started the show with drum n bass musics; chanting softly and slowly to warm the stage with powerful beats. His playful Drum N Bass invites shy audiences that needs a crack before they are warm up. After DJ Yudha performance, Chris Brown (US) and Johanna Poethig (US) came to the stage to give their audiovisual collaborative performance. Chris and Johanna presented a composition of pure synthetic audio that combines with experimental video from their project called “The Lost Cities”. This performance is part of their proposed activities from a presentation (HONF) and workshop (Soundboutique) which they did earlier. Death Beetle, a musician from Australia that are now is based in Yogyakarta followed the run down after Chris and Johanna. He distorted the stage with noise music which composed with Hip Hop strong beats, Drum N Bass Remixes, and also Reggae rhythmic touches in the mix. A moment of collaboration happened in transition of SONIXX and Kempoy Stereo (Surabaya) entrance to the stage. The both of them just shouting each other through their machines, filling each other gaps with noises and beats with the unstop hailing and shouting from MC Ican and MC Hamam. SONIXX later on continue to tease the crowds with his unfriendly sounds that composed with break dancing beats with his various musical battery-based instruments.

The dance crowds become our best friend now, as Butcher Bachelor (Jakarta) a chip-tunes musician that was written JW86 in breakcore_LABS publication speeds up the stage. (Our apology for the miswriting; it was the fault of a guy that was an uncle of our neighbor’s boyfriends’ classmate during kindergarten, have a syndrome of extreme Gymnophobic mutated Bacillophobia). Butcher Bachelor performance is filled with speedcore musics with rough 8-bit sounds and loud sound samples from 80′s horror movies. The performance was enriched by visuals from VJ Manticore and VJ Numberone that stunned the back wall of the stage installation. After that, the stage was robed by masked musicians which the rundown stated their names as Electrocore and Julian Abraham alongside with Tommy Surya and Andreas Siagian. Their performance was a composition of noise from Grinder Analog Sound that combines with digital speedcore music and 3D graphical sound generated visual. Sigit – TKNSHT also join the collaboration with shouts and screams to burn the crowd madness in to fire. The show was followed by Fat London (FR) from Paris with his energetic break beat and techno music that forced tireless crowd to keep their move. He gave a special performance to celebrate his friend’s 2.4 birthday, 3 times older than breakcore_LABS who only reach 0.6. This is the second time Fat London collaborate with HONF, and today his great performance remind us of cellSONIC on Cellsbutton#02. In the closing of the event, DJ Adheet from Energy Room amuse the crowd by his play list filled with famous track of loud Drum N Bass music. His music was responded with shouts and rapping from Venzha of Electrocore. Curse the 12.00, it was time to stop although we didn’t wanted too. We passed 15 minutes of cinderella’s breaking time and our stage still stand metal solid. Society law, fairy tales beat us all up and force us to stop though our effort break their core in every movement we made. breakcore_LABS 0.5 is held by an initiatives from HONF members in commemorating 10 years of HONF and also celebrating 1 year anniversary of breakcore_LABS. After the breakcore_LABS 0.1 in December 2009, breakcore_LABS has reached 5 series of breakcore events in Indonesia, inviting local and international artists and musicians to act in breakcore_LABS events. Thanks to all, we still progressing and continuing our movement!

The event started at 9 o’clock of 31 December 2009. Inside HONF lab, Julian Abraham started the event with a composition of ambience and glitch music, inviting the audience to start the party. One by one the audience come from outside bringing the legendary local red wine “ANGGUR MERAH”. Music is getting louder, laughter is filling out the space, everyone has joined the party. Breakcore and Speedcore musics is playing as we waited for the new year to arrive. Cheers and hugs, for a new spirits of old dreams and new dreams as Liwoth (a collaboration between Krisna Widiathama and Ichan Harem) play their Noise and Scream music with using LDR oscillator sensors. Next stop, our own private beach in Siung!

breakcore_LABS 0.4 – break-buka-puasa-bersama Yogyakarta – Prague, is a title that created to combine many words starting from breakcore, fasting, together, open community, open platform, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Prague, Czech Republic. Because of various technical difficulties, we started the event at 17.00. (It was scheduled to start at 15.00, lol) The event started with a presentation from Guma Guar, an artist group from Czech Republic. They gave a presentation on their activities that started since 2003 in arts and politics, electronic music and also VJing. After giving their presentation, they follow the session with an audiovisual performance that composed of extreme musics filled with visuals depicting terrors and wars.

We-take-a-short-break-to-open-the-fasting-ceremony. While we did that, a collaborative performance from Krisna Widhiatama and Ichan Harem (which later on they created a group called Llwoth). They performed with white noise and screams to summon demons and worship them. Several people were annoyed by their performance as it was a holy month for Moslem people. Well, we said nothing, because that’s the point of breaking the core!

Darina Alster (CZ)  was on the next on the menu. She gave a presentation of her work which presented in form of performance and video. Her work focus on time, identity and relationship issue. After her presentation, it was Sudjud A. Dartanto, a Writer, Curator and Researcher based in Yogyakarta. He gave presentation about the influence of digital era to local communities in Yogyakarta. The presentation speak general influence on the use of digital tools on the systematic of community work.

The presentation continue with Michal Marianek’s (CZ) presentation. He also presented his previous work and gave a detail explanation on one of his software that he created using Reaktor. He invites several audience to try out his creation and practiced it while he gave several tips and instruction to them. After Michal, Benny Wicaksono (also known as VJ Herbal) from Surabaya gave an explanation on his creation; a wearable VJ tools using generic technology such as CCTV that he used for his VJing technique. Benny closed the presentation session with a demonstration of live VJing using his creation.

The last session was closed with several performances that started with Tony Maryana and his friends. He collaborated with several dancers, incorporating sensors to a barbed wire, iron wire as the main line that connecting two performing dancers. Tony created a sound composition from the performer movements in the performance. The whole event was closed with a collaborative performance from Adit Desiree (ID), Ondrej Skala/JTNB (CZ), and Benny Wicaksono. The performance was a combination of Beatbox Noises from Ondrej composed with synthetic sounds from Adit and analog visuals from Benny.
